Digital artist Jorge Colombo has been using his iPhone and the free Brushes application to create images that look like real paintings
By flicking his fingers across the touchscreen, he builds up the background then adds foreground detail
The glowing screen on the phone allows Colombo to work in the night, depicting New York's vibrant nocturnal character
Views from the street provide a rich source of material for the digital palette and canvas
The colour wheel interface allows the "brush" to draw in virtually any colour, including transparency, and the endless undo/redo facility means the canvas need never get messy
Jorge Colombo was born in Portugal, and has lived in New York since 1998
Colombo's images take anything from a few minutes to half an hour to create
Colombo chooses the angle of his pictures carefully to suit the vertical format. None of his pictures starts with a photograph; they are all drawn from scratch on a blank screen
This view of the corner of a book store was one of Colombo's first iPhone images, and is still one of his favourites
