Boarders surf down active volcano
The latest high adrenaline sport: surfing down a live volcano.
A group of thrill-seekers have developed a 'hot' new adrenaline sport called 'volcano boarding', in which participants race at speeds of up to 50mph down the side of an active volcano. Picture: BIGFOOT HOSTEL/ BARCROFT MEDIA
Dressed in protective jump suits, knee-pads and helmets, the boarders visit the foothills of Nicaragua's Cerro Negro mountain.... Picture: BIGFOOT HOSTEL/ BARCROFT MEDIA

It has been one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua, last erupting in 1999 - the 20th time in its history. Picture: BIGFOOT HOSTEL/ BARCROFT MEDIA
Yet despite its unstable reputation, Phillip Southan, owner of Bigfoot Hostel and Green Pathways Tours, which developed the sport, said all safety precautions are taken. Picture: BIGFOOT HOSTEL/ BARCROFT MEDIA
"The volcano is very active," he said. "But the biggest risk is the risk is getting some scratches if you fall off". Picture: BIGFOOT HOSTEL/ BARCROFT MEDIA
"What we offer is a tour for everyone with absolutely no experience necessary," he continued. Picture: BIGFOOT HOSTEL/ BARCROFT MEDIA
"Nicaraguan rural culture, hiking, amazing views, walking in an active volcano and then of course the high adrenaline boarding down the volcano". Picture: BIGFOOT HOSTEL/ BARCROFT MEDIA
Despite only starting the tour four years ago, volcano boarding has attracted over 10,000 participants. Picture: BIGFOOT HOSTEL/ BARCROFT MEDIA
